AGN Mourns Veteran Actor, Justus Esiri

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) was on Wednesday thrown into a mournful mood following the death of a veteran actor, Justus Esiri.

In their reactions to the development in various interviews Abuja on Wednesday, some of the executive members of the guild expressed concern over the number of departed colleagues in recent times.
Miss Ibinabo Fiberesima, the President of the Guild, described Esiri as a “father”, who mentored her in the Nollywood industry, adding that she would miss the erudite actor.
She also described the death of the veteran actor as shocking, saying that the actor was fantastic and very supportive to the guild.
Mr Agility Onwurah, the Chairman, AGN Abuja chapter, described Esiri’s death was one death too many, adding that the latest death marked the fourth within a week.
“This is a big blow to the industry, it is getting too bad and I am short of words,“ he said.
Ibi Andrew, National Vice President of the Guild, North Central Zone, said that Esiri’s death was a great disaster and a bad signal in the Nolly wood industry.
He said: “It is a bad omen; I am surprised at the sudden death of this great actor.
“The death of actors has been on the rise since we took over this administration “.
According to Andrew, the industry is trying to contend with the barrage of bad news coming from the entertainment industry.
He advised members of the industry to seek “the face of God and his divine intervention in the affairs of the industry.”
Justus Esiri died on Feb. 18, from an undisclosed ailment.
Collins Ifeanyi, an Abuja based Nollywood actor, died on Feb.15. Lugard Onoyemu, Pioneer member, Lagos State chapter of AGN, died on Feb. 14 and Goldie Harvey, an entertainer, also died.

Physician says persistent stress predisposes one to high blood pressure

Dr Adamu Onu, a medical practitioner with Garki Hospital, Abuja, said that if stress became persistent, it could predispose one to high blood pressure.

Onu said in an interview that stress could be managed if it was limited to a short period, but becomes detrimental to the body when it persisted.

``When it occurs in small doses it does not have any effect, it helps us to perform under pressure and also motivates one to do better.

``But when it is consistent, it becomes detrimental to our health,” he said.

An online medical journal, Medical News Today, describes stress as the body's way of responding to any kind of demand.

It can be caused by both good and bad experiences.

When people feel stressed by something going on around them, their bodies react by releasing chemicals into the blood.

According to Onu, stress is physical response that we go through, and this is usually in response to things that we feel threatened about and things that upset our emotions.

`` It is a normal response by human beings and is something that tends to come about when one is not in control of events,” Onu said.

The doctor also said that it was the body’s way of protecting itself ``because if the stress works properly, it helps one to stay focused, energetic and on the alert’’.

He said that when stressed up, the body produces certain hormones called adrenaline and cortisol, and these hormones basically prepare the body for necessary action.

Onu described cortisol as a hormone that disorganises the body system, if the body produces it for too long.

Wikipedia, the online dictionary describes adrenaline as a hormone that increases heart rate, pulse, and blood pressure and raises the blood levels of glucose and lipids.

Onu said that under this condition, the heart might begin to breathe faster, blood pressure goes up, and then the sense becomes sharper.

``This physical change basically increases the stamina and or strength,’’ he said.

According to him, there are certain signs and symptoms which accompany stress.

He said that most times the person may complain of a headache, diarrhea, dizziness, and chest pain, among others.

``You might find out that you are eating less or more, frequent sickness, frequent cold and sleeping too much or too little among others.

``Sometimes one can feel over whelmed, depressed and unhappy, moody, lack concentration or be forgetful; all these are indications of stress,’’ he explained.

He said that the key to managing stress was for one to recognise that he or she was stressed up first and then find a way of coping with it.

He added that some people did not recognise that they were stressed up, adding that management was not necessarily medication.

``This is because it usually occurs in a situation that one feels out of control, so one basically needs to find a way to handle the stress,” he said.

He, however, advised anyone going through any form of stress to find methods of coping like engaging in physical exercises and or listening to classical music.

According to reports, McCready had been a mess since the father of her youngest child, record producer David Wilson, was found dead in his home on January 13 of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. McCready’s two children were removed from her home by a judge on February 6 and she was committed to a treatment facility for a mental-health and alcohol-abuse evaluation. She was released two days later.
McCready had attempted suicide twice before, once in 2005 and again in 2008. She also made several trips to rehab and appeared in 2010 on the VH1 reality show “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.”

UNILAG Student Sells His Kidney To Graduate With First Class

According to a report on DeeLinkage, a 24-year-old graduate of the University of Lagos, had to part with his kidney, just so he could graduate with a first class from the institution.
Here is the full story:
A University of Lagos (UNILAG) student who couldn’t swap kidneys to save his father’s life confessed in the hospital that he sold one of his kidney to graduate with a first class.

The 24 years old boy recollected how he sold one of his kidneys to the dean of his faculty a few days before his convocation. He says he was being threatened with the reality of having to spend an additional two years to his already prolonged eight years stay in the school.

He was nearly in tears while he explained why he couldn’t donate his last and only kidney to his father who is in desperate need of a kidney to survive.

Despite him graduating with a first class, it is sad to say he has never been able to secure an adequate job.

So with no kidney, no job, and no money, how does this young boy expect to save his dying father?
No job and not enough money…and now he needs a kidney to save his dad.

Pulmonary Embolism: Learn About What Killed Goldie and How To Avoid It.

Its a sad thing we just lost a star and forever will she remain in our hearts. She’s dead but we deserve to know the cause of her death and how to avoid it. This post is to educate everyone on pulmonary embolism which is believed to be the cause of Goldie’s death and how to avoid it.
A Pulmonary Embolism (PE) is a blood clot in the lung. The clot usually forms in smaller vessels in the leg, pelvis, arms, or heart, but occasionally the clot can be large. If the pulmonary embolism is large, it may be capable of such a large mismatch, the patient cannot get enough oxygen into the blood and can be become acutely short of breath which may lead to death.
CAUSES
Several risk factors can make a person more likely to develop a blood clot that can eventually break loose and travel to the lung which includes
1) Immobilization (which reduces flow),
2) Damaged vessel wall (which forms a location for clot to start)
3) Hypercoagulable state (which makes it easier for blood to clot)
4) Trauma and Injury to leg or arm
5) Heart disease
6) Burns
7) Previous history of blood clot in the legs (Deep Vein Thrombosis) or pulmonary embolism.
8) Cancer.
9) Pregnancy, estrogen therapy and oral contraceptives.
10) Certain protein and enzyme deficiencies.
SYMPTOMS
Not all pulmonary embolism exhibit the same symptoms but the common ones are; Chest pain, shortness of breath, anxiety, cough, sweating and passing out
TREATMENT
Some people with pulmonary embolism are critically ill. They have severe shortness of breath, low blood pressure, and low oxygen concentrations.
Patients with chest pain will be placed on a heart monitor, and usually an IV will be inserted, labs drawn and an electrocardiogram (EKG, ECG) ordered.
The most frequently used treatment for pulmonary embolism include;
1) Oxygen.
2) Blood thinning medications (Anti-coagulants like Heparin, warfarin and enoxaparin)
3) “Clot buster” medications (also called thrombolytics) are given to those who are critically ill.
4) In some life-threatening cases, the patient is taken to a radiologic surgery by an interventional radiologist.
PREVENTION
A frequent cause of pulmonary embolism is a long car or airplane trips when the blood pools in the legs and forms a blood clot that then breaks loose and travels to the lung.
Stop at least every 2 hours on a car trip and stretch the legs and walk.
On long airplane flights, get up and walk the aisle at least once an hour to prevent blood clot formation.
After surgery, compression units are placed on the legs that function like the leg muscles, to help clot formation. Anitclotting medications are also utilized.

Guard Killed, 8 Expatriates Abducted By Gunmen In Bauchi

Gunmen stormed the compound of a Lebanese construction company, Setraco, in Bauchi State, yesterday, kidnapping eight foreigners and killing a security guard, police said.
A Briton, an Italian, a Greek and five Lebanese workers, including a woman and a child were among those kidnapped.
Confirming the incident, Bauchi Police Commissioner Mohammed Ladan said the gunmen attacked a police station and a prison overnight before storming the construction firm’s compound.
“We repelled the attack on police station and the security men at the prison yard also repelled the attack, but they burnt two vehicles in Jama’are police station,” Ladan said.
“They then attacked Setraco construction, killed a security guard and succeeded in kidnapping people.”
Although Ladan did not disclose the identity of the people kidnapped, he said Police had commenced investigations into the separate attacks, adding that he will only give detail of the kidnapped workers of the company after investigations.
When contacted, the Italian foreign ministry confirmed one of its nationals was taken in the raid. However, a spokesman for the British Embassy in Abuja said it was still investigating.
Chairman of Jama’are Local Government Area, Alhaji Adamu Aliyu, has explained that the eight people kidnapped in Setraco Construction Company are expatriates.
Speaking with newsmen in Bauchi, Aliyu noted; “Among the workers kidnapped were one from Britain, one from Greece, one from Italy, while the remaining five are Lebanese.”

N5bn to rehabilitate prostitutes FG, FCT get knocks

Recently, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu on the floor of House asked the Senate to consider the possibility of legalising prostitution in the country.
Ekweremadu who spoke during a debate on a motion on the scourge of human trafficking in the country, Ekweremadu said since it has become impossible to stop prostitution in the land; the
According to him “we need to regulate prostitution in this country so that if anyone wants to indulge in prostitution, the person should be registered and issued with a license. If we say we want to stop it, it would be difficult. It is done in other countries; let us regulate it by issuing license.”
But, instead of legalising the profession as proposed by Ekweremadu, the Federal Government seems to be looking in another direction by declaring a ‘ war ‘ on Abuja call girls, a faction out of the numerous sex centres in the country.
In a related development, the government has set up two training centres for commercial sex workers as part of measures to remove them from the streets.
The training centres would be located at Bwari Area Council and Lugbe in Anuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC.
The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has also proposed to spend N5 billion this year to rehabilitate prostitutes and destitute who loiter the streets of Abuja.
However, this development has been generating mixed feelings amongst Nigerians. We present their sampled opinions.
Maybe another conduit for funds diversion — Prof Joy Ngozi EzeiloSenate should consider regulating the act in the country.
